When Change Finds You
(By Jay Newcombe, Co-Founder, Altvina)
The Day Everything Shifted
I still remember the conference room.
The long table, the quiet shuffle of papers, the uneasy glances. Our largest client had just gone under during the financial collapse of 2008, and my team at the printing company was told to "pause all active jobs." At first, I tried to stay hopeful — surely things would work out. But a few days later, we were back in that same room, only this time we were being handed our severance packets.
I don't remember much after that moment. I think I went blank.
Back then, my job wasn't just something I did — it was a big part of who I was. I had recently been promoted to manage sales procurement, and for someone still early in their career, that felt like proof that hard work paid off. I'd spent years trying to do everything right, play by the rules, be the reliable one. When the layoff happened, it wasn't just a financial hit — it felt like I'd lost my identity.
If you're navigating a career transition right now, you don't have to do it alone. Whether you need help with your résumé, guidance from a mentor who's been there, or support through a peer group, we're here to help.
Learning to Rebuild Confidence
The months that followed were rough. I interviewed constantly, trying to stay upbeat, but each rejection stung more than the last. Eventually, I gave in to practicality and accepted a call-center job that paid a fraction of my old salary. I didn't enjoy the work, but I was running out of cash — and out of confidence.
Funny enough, that job became a turning point. I liked the people. I learned new things. I rebuilt, one small step at a time. Within a few years, I'd moved into analytics and eventually business intelligence — roles that re-ignited my curiosity and reminded me that growth doesn't always come in straight lines. Looking back, I can honestly say that "setback" became one of the best lessons of my life.
Still, the emotions from that period never completely leave you. Over the past few weeks, as I've watched so many talented professionals face layoffs, a lot of those old feelings came rushing back — the uncertainty, the fear, the quiet sense of failure. I know what it's like to stare at a résumé and wonder if any of it still matters.
But I also know now that those moments don't define us. Our work isn't our worth.
Focusing on Health and Career Resilience
If I could go back and talk to my 2008 self, I'd tell him to breathe. To stop spending so much energy on things outside his control. To focus instead on health — both physical and mental — and to reach out for help sooner.
If you're navigating a career transition right now, there are some resources that can help you take that next small step:
Websites like CareerOneStop, supported by the U.S. Department of Labor, offer free résumé templates and local job-search tools. Platforms such as Jobscan can help you test ATS-friendly résumé keywords against real listings. And of course, our own free Altvina ATS Resume Enhancer lets you see how your résumé performs in modern applicant-tracking systems before you make your next move. If you need more comprehensive help, our professional resume writing services offer expert guidance tailored to your situation.

Sometimes focusing on health means getting professional help — whether that's a mentor, a career coach, or a licensed therapist. Tools like the Psychology Today therapist directory can help you connect with someone who understands the emotional side of career change and mental health during uncertainty.
Beyond the practical steps, I've also found value in connecting with others who understand the human side of transition — whether through local networking groups, online communities like LinkedIn's Career Pivot Group, or simply trusted peers who can listen without judgment. It's hard to rebuild alone, and you don't have to.
Blending Technology and Human Guidance
That's part of why Altvina exists today.
When we built this company, we wanted it to be more than a business. We wanted it to be a place where professionals and experts could connect — where people could use smart technology and human guidance to move forward, whether that means improving a résumé, planning a new direction, or finding the right mentor.
Through our mentorship programs, professionals can connect with experienced guides who've navigated similar transitions. Our Professional Circles offer peer support and accountability in small, facilitated groups — because sometimes the best help comes from people who understand what you're going through.
I believe in that mix of technology and humanity. One without the other can only take you so far.
If you're in a moment of transition right now — whether by choice or by circumstance — I hope you'll remember this: you are not your job title. You are the sum of your experiences, your character, your resilience, and the people who walk beside you through change.
Take a breath. Ask for help when you need it. Keep moving forward.
The next chapter has a way of showing up right when it's supposed to.
